IHEID The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) is a leading postgraduate educational and research institute situated in Geneva, Switzerland. It is active in the fields of political science, international law, international economics, international history, and development studies. IHEID is operational since 1 January 2008, following the merger of the previously existing Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI - est. 1927) with the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED - est. 1961). It is accredited as a "Haute ecole" by the Swiss University Conference. The Graduate Institute of International Studies was among the first academic institutions to teach international relations in the world. It was the first university entirely dedicated to the study of that field, and it offered one of the first Ph.D. degrees in international relations. Originally, the Graduate Institute of International Studies mainly formed diplomats associated with the League of Nations, also based in Geneva. The Villa Barton campus on the shores of Lake Geneva. The IHEID campus is spread out around Geneva. The main building, Villa Barton, is situated in a private park on the shores of Lake Geneva, while newer constructions are situated in the district regrouping international organizations with offices in Geneva, such as the United Nations. Although IHEID is an independent academic institution, it is associated with University of Geneva. IHEID does not participate in studies ranking the world's best universities, such as the Times Higher Education Supplement ranking. However, Newsweek's "Top 100 Global Universities" ranked the University of Geneva 32nd in the world in 2006. In 2008, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked University of Geneva 68th of the best universities worldwide
